Ways to Get a Library Card 

Cards are FREE to anyone who lives, works, owns property, or attends school in Calcasieu Parish.

Visit a library branch or if 18+ years, apply online.

  • 18+ years: When visiting a library branch to complete a registration card, please present proof of a Photo I.D. and address. Proof of address includes a driver's license, checkbook, or received mail. 
  • Under 18: The registration card must be signed by their parent or legal guardian with proof of a Photo I.D. and proof of address.

Online registration is limited to adults. This service is limited to online catalog access until the account is approved by staff, and a permanent library card is issued. Once staff completes the approval process, users may access the electronic resources such as OverDrive, Hoopla, and Freegal.

  • Use it at any library branch.
  • It's valid for 1 year.
  • Report your lost library card immediately to any Library branch.
    • It's $.50 to replace your card.
  • We honor Library Southwest cards from the following parishes: Allen, Beauregard, Cameron, Jeff Davis, and Vernon. Learn more about the Libraries Southwest Borrowing Service

  • Cards expire every year in order to keep our records current regarding your address, phone number and/or email address. Email address benefits 
    • Expiration exceptions: temporary borrowers, internet only, temporary online registration users.
  • To renew your card, visit/contact a library branch, or view My Account in the online catalog.
    • If renewing online, please review (and edit) information under the My Information tab. 
      • If your card doesn't renew online (see Privileges expire section under the My Information tab), please contact our library staff for assistance.
        • Blocked or Barred users must visit a local branch to clear up account to use resources and services.
        • The online renewal option is currently unavailable within the mobile app.

Items with holds

State Laws on confidentiality prohibit the library from allowing anyone but yourself from picking up items that you have on hold, unless the library has your permission, on record in the computer system, for others to pick up your items. 

  • Please check with a staff member for assistance.
  • The Library has an automated system that will contact the patron about available holds.
  • If we have an email address on file, an email will be sent notifying the patron about the available hold.
  • There are no limits on the number of holds a patron can have.
    • Exception: eContent such as OverDrive which has a limit of 10 holds total per library card. This includes any items you have recommended, items you already have on hold, and holds that have become available but you haven’t yet checked out.


Renewing Items, Renewing Library Card, and Returning items 

Renewing Item(s)

Library item(s) can be renewed twice, if no one has placed a hold on the item(s).

  • Visit/call any library branch; please have the items along with your library card handy.
  • Download the Mobile App to access your account.
  • Call the 24/7 self-service number at (337) 437-4153 or 1-800-240-0212
  • Access the online catalog to view MY ACCOUNT.

With an email address on file, we can notify you 3 days prior to the item(s) being overdue. 

 

Renewing Library Card

Returning Items

Return items to any Calcasieu Parish Library branch, no matter where the items were originally checked out. Drop the items at the designated return areas. If after hours, use one of our drop boxes.

 


 

Email address benefits 

What are the benefits for giving the library your email address?

  • Receive alerts when your hold is available for pickup.
  • Receive alerts that checked out items will be overdue in 3 days.
  • Receive alerts when items are overdue as well as bill notices.

Visit or contact a library branch, complete this form, or you have the option to edit existing info (address, phone number and/or email address) via My Account--My Information section in the catalog. 

 


 

Fees and Fines

Fees for overdue material: 25 cents per item per day. There is a maximum cap of $5.00.

  • There is a 1-day grace period when returned on the grace day.
  • If item(s) is returned after the grace period, charges will apply to all days that the item is late.
    • The grace period is no longer applicable.
  • Laptops, Hotspots, and iPads are $10 for each overdue with a maximum cap at $70. There is no grace period.
  • Patrons may accrue additional fees on items for such matters as repair.


How may I pay those fines?

Visit a library branch or pay your fines online.

 

What if I've lost item(s)?

  • An item is marked lost after 45 days, and the cost of the item is charged on the account. 
    • You do not have to pay any fines that have accumulated on the item.
  • Did you find that item?
    • If you've already paid for it, bring the item to the library with your receipt.
      • Refunds are possible within 6 months of original payment.
    • The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury will mail the refund.

What if you lost your Library card? 

  • Report it immediately to any library branch.
  • If the card is not reported lost, and someone else checks out items on the card, the cardholder is responsible for the items checked out.
  • The charge for a replacement card is $.50.

 


 

Pin Number Information

  • What is a Pin# and why do I need it? 
    A pin number is a 4 digit number giving access to your library account via the online catalog, our mobile app or through the 800 number (1-800-240-0212). Use this number to access WiFi in the library or use the library's public computers.

  • What if I forget my pin#? Visit or contact your local library branch
    • Reset your pin via the online catalog. (A preferred email address must be on file at the library.)
    • You must reset pin within hour of receiving confirmation email or you will need to repeat steps.

  • May I change it online? Yes. Use the online catalogYou do need your old pin# in order to change to a new one.

My card has expired! Now what?

I replaced my Library card or email address. Which resources are affected by this change?

Freegal  With replacement card, you'll be treated as a new patron. 
It will even appear as if app users have lost all your music as it is tied to your previous barcode. The vendor is unable to transfer any data from old library card number to the new one. Suggestion is to back-up your music so that you may reclaim it from your old barcode. (See Mobile Apps section entitled "How do I backup Freegal Music from my iOS mobile device into iTunes" and "How do I get music off my Android device onto my computer".) You will also need to rebuild any created playlists and wish lists. 
Change notification email under My Account---Notifications 
Hoopla  Update card number (or pin) in Settings--Library section  Need previous email address for login. Click on email address (top right) to change address. Otherwise, you'll need to setup a new account with new email address. 

Interlibrary Loan (Loanshark)

 

Alert staff when you have replaced your library card; the new card # needs to be updated in this service.  You may do so under Account in Loanshark. 
Library Elf  Add replacement ID, and remove lost ID in account.  My Account---Sign-in tab--enter new address---Save. A confirmation email will be sent. Please confirm. 
OverDrive Alert staff when you have replaced your library card. The card # needs to be merged with lost card so that holds/checkouts can be transferred.  Email is enabled when placing holds. You may change it during the hold process. 
Zinio for Libraries  Not affected  You must know previous email used to setup account. Login, access My Account to change email address. 

 

Services and Technology in the Library

  • Your library has tons of services and technology available within most or all of their locations. Such services include checking out laptops and other devices, WiFi access and printing, public computers, and document scanners.

Non-resident options

We do offer two different temporary accounts. Visit or contact a nearby location for more details and assistance.

  • Option 1: a 3-month account which has a limit of 3 checkouts within a 3-month period. This does include access to public PCs.
  • Option 2: an Internet account which limits use to public PCs only. Checkout of material (books, etc.) is not available.They may visit or contact a nearby location for more details and assistance.
