Get the basics on owning a library card. 

Basic Information

  • Cards expire every year. This helps us keep your information up to date.  
    • Exceptions: Temporary borrowers and online registrants who've not received an official CPPL library card.
  • Cards can be used at any location.
  • Report a lost card immediately to any location. There is a 50 cent replacement charge.
  • We honor Library Southwest cards from the following parishes: Allen, Beauregard, Cameron, Jeff Davis, And Vernon.

Have a card, but can't find it.

  • Contact or visit a local library location for assistance.
    • Please do not register for another account.

Ways to Get a Card

  • Cards are FREE to anyone who lives, works, owns property, or attends school in Calcasieu Parish.
    • If visiting the area, ask staff about accessing computers, resources, and services. 

  • Get a card by visiting a library branch or if 18 years or older, apply online.
    • When visiting a library branch, bring photo ID and proof of your address. Ex: driver's license, checkbook, or mail.
  • Online registration is limited to adults.
  • Online registrants are limited to using the catalog, placing holds, and viewing My Account.
    • Once the account is approved and a permanent library card is assigned, you have access to resources such as OverDrive, hoopla, and Freegal.

  • Temporary cards are issued as well. Check with staff for additional details. 

  • NOTE: If you need to access the public PCs and don't have a card, public PCs are accessible.

  • Log in to My Account.
  • Please review the information listed prior to renewing.
    • See instructions below on editing your information.
  • Once information is edited, click/tap the Save button.

  • Click/tap the Edit button.
  • Editable information is limited to address, phone number and/or email address.
    • Email address must be in our database in order to edit.
  • If you are not able to edit your information, please contact a library branch or contact chat. 

The PIN number

  • What is a PIN number and why do I need it? 
    A pin number is a 4-digit number giving access to your library account via the online catalog, the mobile app or through the 800 number (1-800-240-0212).
    • Use this PIN number to access WiFi in the library or use the library's public computers.

  • What if I forget my pin number?
    • Visit or contact your local library branch, or contact chat.
    • Reset your pin via the online catalog. A preferred email address must be on file at the library.
    • You must reset pin within an hour of receiving the confirmation email. Otherwise, you will need to repeat steps.

  • May I change the PIN number online? 
    • Yes. Use the online catalogYou do need your old pin number in order to change to a new one.

Notification Options

What are the benefits of giving the library your email address?

  • Receive alerts when your hold is available for pickup.
  • Receive alerts that checked out items will be overdue in 3 days.
  • Receive alerts when items are overdue as well as bill notices.

Visit or contact a library branch. If an existing email is on file, it can be edited under the My Information section in the catalog.

 

SMS Text Messages

If you prefer text notifications for bills, overdues, holds, general messages and/or announcements, opt into this service by contacting your local library branch, or DIY via My Information under My Account in the online catalog.
  • Click/tap My Account (top menu bar).
  • Enter library card number and pin number, then click/tap Log In.
  • View the My Information tab.
  • Scroll to the SMS Notifications tab.
  • Click/tap ADD NEW.
  • Enter MOBILE for Label field.
  • Enter cell number in Phone Number field.
  • Check desired opt-in choices, then click/tap Save

 

Phone Notifications

We do offer notifications via phone. Ask staff for assistance.
If this option is chosen, note that with our current phone service, the number on the caller ID will be 337-721-7116.

  • If the message gets cut off at the beginning of the recording, it will repeat the entire message.
  • You will only receive a phone notice if you have not chosen to be notified by text or email.

Manage Accounts

Ways to manage your account.

 

How do I change my address, phone number or email address on my library account?  

  • Visit or contact a library branch, or edit existing information such as an address, phone number or email address in the My Account section in the catalog.
  • This option is currently unavailable within the mobile app.

Lost Card

Lost Card 

  • Report it immediately to any library branch.
  • If you do not report a lost card, all items check out on that card are the responsibility of that cardholder.
  • It is .50 to replace a card. 

Expired Card

  • Cards do expire every year. This helps us keep our records current.  
  • Expired card users are unable to check out materials until the account is renewed, and any fines are cleared. 
    • This include both physical or electronic material.
  • Contact or visit a library branchor view the My Account section in the catalog.
    • Under My Account, review and edit information under the My Information section before renewing the card. 
    • If your card doesn't renew online, please contact our library staff for assistance.
    • Blocked or Barred users must visit a local branch to clear up the account.
    • The online renewal option is currently unavailable within the mobile app.

Non-residents

We do offer two different temporary accounts. Visit or contact a nearby location for more details and assistance.

  • Option 1 is a 3-month account.
    • You are limited to 3 checkouts within a 3 month period. This does include access to public PCs.
  • Option 2 is an internet account.
    • You are limited to using the public PCs only.
    • You cannot check out material.

How many items may I check out at one time?

eContent (ex: eBooks, online movies, etc.) have different checkout, download, streaming and hold limits. Refer to the specific resource for more details.

Learn more about renewing or returning items, what to do if you've lost an item, and information about holds or fines.

Renewing Items

Library item(s) can be renewed twice, if no one has placed a hold on the item(s). 

  • Visit or contact a library branch, or contact chat. Please have the items along with your library card handy.
  • Download the mobile app to access your account.
  • Access the online catalog to view MY ACCOUNT.
  • Call the 24/7 self-service number at (337) 437-4153 or 1-800-240-0212. 

With an email address on file, we can notify you 3 days prior to the item or items being overdue. 

Returning Items

Return items to any library location regardless of where the item was originally checked out. Drop the items at the designated return areas. If after hours, use one of our drop boxes.

All about Holds

State Laws on confidentiality prohibits the library from allowing anyone but yourself from picking up items that you have on hold, unless we have your permission for others to pick up your items. This permission must be noted in our computer system.

  • Check with a staff member for assistance.
  • We have an automated system that will contact you when your hold is ready for pickup. 
  • Opt-in to SMS Messaging.

  • We normally keep holds on the "hold shelf" for 5 days.
    • For extensions, please contact the pickup location for assistance.

  • With a valid email address on file, we'll notify you about the available hold.
  • Get notified via text messaging by signing up for SMS notifications via My Account--My Information.
  • No limits on the number of holds, but there's is a limit on the number of items that you may checkout at one time.

  • We now offer hold suspensions.
    • Also available within the new mobile app.

  • eContent (eBooks or eAudiobooks from OverDrive) has a limit of 10 holds total per library card.
    • This includes any items that you have recommended, items you already have on hold, and holds that have become available, but haven't been checked out.

All about Fines

Fees for overdue material is 25 cents per item per day. The status for user accounts with a fines of $25 or more will be blocked. 

  • There is a 1 day grace period when an item is returned on the grace day.
  • If item is returned after the grace period, charges will apply to all days that the item is late; the grace period no longer applies. 
  • Laptops, Hotspots, and iPads are $10 for each overdue with a maximum fee of $70.
    • There is no grace period.
  • You may accrue additional fees on items that need repair or or damaged. 

Blocked Status

  • User owes $25.00 or more in fines or fees on account. 
  • Lost items on account, and item cost is $25 or more. 
    • Fines of any amount blocks users from checking out a laptop.

Now what?

  • An item is marked lost after 45 days, and the cost of the item is charged to the account.
  • You do not have to pay any fines that have accumulated on the item.

    Did you find that item? 

  • If you've already paid for it, bring the item to the library with your receipt.
  • Refunds are possible within 6 months of original payment.
  • The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury will mail the refund.
  •  

    Didn't find item in the collection. Now what?

    Borrow or Suggest it using the library's online catalog.


    Library Services/Technology

    Your library has services and technology available within its locations. Services include checking out laptops and other devices, WiFi access and printing, public computers, and document scanners. Details.

    Freading

    Lost card?

    • Once you login with new card number, you're considered a new user.
      All checked out content is lost. 

    Changed email address?

    • Email not tied to account.

    Freegal

    Lost card?

    • With replacement card, you'll be treated as a new patron.
      It will even appear as if app users have lost all your music as it is tied to your previous barcode. The vendor is unable to transfer any data from old library card number to the new one. Suggestion is to back-up your music so that you may reclaim it from your old barcode. See HELP.
      You will also need to rebuild any created playlists and wish lists.

    • Update card number (or pin) in Settings--Library section

    Changed email address?

    • Need previous email address for login. Click on email address (top right) to change address. Otherwise, you'll need to setup a new account with new email address.


    Loanshark

    Lost card?

    • Alert staff when you have replaced your library card; the new card # needs to be updated in this service. 

    Changed email address?

    • You may change it under Account in Loanshark.

    OverDrive

    Lost card?

    • Alert staff when you have replaced your library card. The card # needs to be merged with lost card so that holds/checkouts can be transferred. 

    Changed email address?

    • Email is enabled when placing holds. You may change it during the hold process.

    RBDigital (formerly known as Zinio)

    Lost card?

    • Account is not affected. 

    Changed email address?

    • You must know previous email used to setup account. Login, access My Account to change email address.


    Library Elf

    Lost card?

    • Add replacement ID, and remove lost ID in account.

    Changed email address?

    • My Account---Sign-in tab--enter new address---Save. A confirmation email will be sent. Please confirm.
